16 weeks pregnant: what can I expect?

By now you would have had at least a couple of check ups to determine the health of your baby. Your doctor would have given you some shots to increase your immunity. If you haven’t had your shots make sure they are up to date. Ask your midwife when you meet her.

This is not a compulsory test. But if your doctor feels you are a high risk candidate or there is a chance your baby might have chromosomal problems he or she may recommend a CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling) test or Amniocentesis. Having this test can be physically and emotionally exhausting for you. CVS can be done earlier than an Amniocentesis. CVS can be done as early as 10 to 12 weeks of pregnancy and is more reliable. Amniocentesis is usually done around 14 to 16 weeks of pregnancy.

If this is not your first pregnancy, by the time you are 16 weeks pregnant, you might want to make plans for your baby’s older sibling. Who is going to take care of your baby while you are at the hospital? You could arrange for your mum to come stay with you for a while so that you won’t be too exhausted.
